Biomimetic Dentistry
Keep more of what you have. Restore what you need.
Biomimetic dentistry is a philosophy of restorative care guided by how healthy natural teeth perform — preserving as much of your original tooth structure as possible while restoring strength, function, and appearance.
Request an AppointmentWhat it means
Dentistry that works with your tooth, not against it.
“Biomimetic” simply means restoring teeth in a way that mimics how healthy natural teeth perform. Nature is our blueprint — biomimetic dentistry conserves healthy tooth structure while creating beautiful, lasting results.
Rather than defaulting to a single material or technique, each tooth is evaluated on its own terms: what's been lost, what remains, and what approach will restore it while protecting as much of the natural tooth as possible.
Dr. Brodie is a member of the Academy of Biomimetic Dentistry, and this philosophy guides restorative decisions at every visit — not as a separate service, but as the lens through which treatment is planned.
When this comes up
When a tooth needs attention.
Restorative care becomes part of the conversation in a number of general situations. Not every tooth calls for it, and not every patient needs it — it's part of what a thorough exam is built to notice.
- A tooth weakened by decay
- A cracked or damaged tooth
- An older or large existing filling that needs attention
- Wear or structural damage over time
The difference in philosophy
Removing only what needs to go.
The difference isn't a single technique or material — it's a starting question. Before any preparation begins, we ask how much of the tooth can reasonably stay, and shape the treatment around that answer.
That means removing only what's necessary, protecting healthy structure wherever possible, and matching the restoration to the individual tooth rather than the other way around.
This isn't a claim that one approach is always superior. Every tooth is different, and a thoughtful plan accounts for what's actually in front of us.
How we plan treatment
No treatment begins until you understand it.
Planning starts with a careful exam and a clear explanation of what we find — on the monitor, in plain language, so you're looking at the same thing we are.
From there, we walk through the options and what each one involves. No procedure begins until you understand it, agree with it, and want it — the same 90-minute first visit standard that shapes every new patient experience here.
Every plan passes the same family filter: if it isn't what we'd recommend for our own family, we don't recommend it for yours.
Preservation before restoration
Sometimes the best restoration is no restoration at all.
The most conservative restoration is the one you never need. ICON® and Curodont™ help stop and repair pioneering bacteria before a filling is necessary — preserving the healthy tooth structure you were born with.
This early intervention is part of the broader range of services we offer, and it's often the first and simplest expression of biomimetic thinking: catching a problem early enough that restoration isn't yet the question.
Thoughtful planning, either direction
Sometimes a crown is the conservative choice.
Preserving tooth structure doesn't mean avoiding a crown when a tooth genuinely needs more coverage. In some cases, a tooth has lost enough structure that a smaller restoration won't hold up — and choosing a crown at that point is the thoughtful decision, not a departure from conservative care.
When that's the right call, our same-day crown process means that fit is determined in a single visit, without a temporary in between.
The bigger picture
One tooth, or a bigger picture.
A conservative restoration is sometimes the whole plan, and sometimes one part of a larger one. Comprehensive restorative care is a phased process that respects the order in which a mouth needs to be put back together — and a biomimetic approach carries through each phase.
It can also be sequenced with orthodontic treatment. Improving tooth position first, with Invisalign or clear aligners, can make restorative work more conservative and better sequenced. And whatever the plan, it rests on the same foundation as everything else we do — healthy gum tissue, maintained through Guided Biofilm Therapy.
